Why should we undertake Response to Intervention (RTI) when we already have several other initiatives going on in our district?
Response from Ann Casey, Ph.D.: RTI is a framework that could be used as an organizing tool for all of our work in education. The main intent of RTI is to ensure students receive targeted instruction early so all students can be successful. In RTI, we integrate measurement/data systems to focus instruction by using a problem solving process. These components are the framework...[read full response]

Parent Involvement 4 Months, 2 Weeks ago

I'm trying to wrap my hands around the notion of parent involvement for RtI. Aside from the collaborative component of interventions with specific children and parent informational meetings and newsletters, does anyone have ideas for maximizing parental involvement around RtI?
Thanks,
Charles

Are you involving your school improvement committee or other District/School committees in rolling out RtI? Are parents involved in any of the above?

Pete:
Good questions. At this point, I'm hoping to have the model more firmly built before bringing in parent input. Like everyone else, parents are very busy, especially those who are interested on being a part of school committees. I don't want to give them something that is still evolving very quickly. Obviously, RtI requires constant change, but it still seems premature.
Currently, as in the old model, parents are closely involved in Tier 3 interventions. Often, they are involved or communicated with at the Tier 2 level. The nature of Tier 1 probably makes it unnecessary or even problematic.
We currently have a website devoted to our model and RtI. Additionally, we have letters ready to go. To me, this is passive parent involvement and not what I suspect people are referring to when suggesting the importance of parent involvement.
Thanks,
Charles
