Why should we undertake Response to Intervention (RTI) when we already have several other initiatives going on in our district?

Response from Ann Casey, Ph.D.: RTI is a framework that could be used as an organizing tool for all of our work in education.  The main intent of RTI is to ensure students receive targeted instruction early so all students can be successful. In RTI, we integrate measurement/data systems to focus instruction by using a problem solving process.  These components are the framework...[read full response]

RtI position at our school? 2 Months, 2 Weeks ago
Greetings to everyone! In the past year I have been reading and attending workshops/ conferences on implementing RtI in my classroom. I am a Secondary Math & Spanish teacher and am working on my own to implement RtI strategies in my classes. I recently graduated with my Master's degree in Teacher Leadership.

Our local district is considering the addition of an RtI staff member. I think this may be something I could do - but is there more specific training I need? Are there specialized certifications?

Any help would be appreciated! Gracias, Rebecca

Hi Rebecca,

Our reading specialist took on the RtI Coordinator job for our district. I didn't catch what state you are in, but I know that our specialist is very familiar with interventions that are available and research based, progress monitoring and data organization. We use TPRI at the elementary level for a universal screener and are looking into possibilities for math. I am not sure what your experience is, but I would familiarize myself with elementary best practices and anything they use to monitor progress of students. :)
